Hybrid turmeric prices increased due to higher demand. Better quality also helped growers fetch higher price for the variety.

“Many traders expected some fresh demand from North India, but that has not happened in Erode. Hence, they quoted a lower price. They are expecting fresh orders in September,” said R K V Ravishankar, President, Erode Turmeric Merchants Association.

But the demand for the hybrid finger turmeric has increased and so the traders after inspecting the hybrid turmeric quoted increased price, have purchased all the 150 bags. This is due to its quality.

At the Erode Turmeric Merchants Association sales yard, the finger turmeric was sold at ₹4,377-6,555 a quintal, root variety ₹4,039-6,531.

Salem Hybrid: The finger turmeric was sold at ₹5,769-8,509. Root variety ₹5,584-6,799. Of the 960 bags that arrived for sale, 213 were sold.

At the Regulated Market Committee, the finger turmeric fetched ₹5,698 to ₹6,559 and root variety ₹5,618 to ₹6,536. Of the 674 bags on offer, 543 found takers. At the Erode Co-operative Marketing Society, the finger turmeric was sold at ₹5,869 to ₹6,789, root variety ₹5,410 to ₹6,786. All the 811 bags placed for sale were picked up.
