Prices of several tea varieties, especially high-priced ones, were lower at Kochi auctions due to poor arrivals and subdued upcountry demand.
Though the CTC dust market opened on a firm trend, it became irregular and sometimes lower with the progress of the sale.
According to auctioneers Forbes, Ewart & Figgis, exporters continued to be active on medium and plainer grainier varieties.
In sale no 4, the quantity on offer in CTC grades was 8,21,500 kg. The market for orthodox barely remained steady and exporters continued to absorb dust grades. The quantity on offer was 16,000 kg. In the Cochin CTC dust quotation, good varieties fetched ₹115-160, mediums quoted ₹110-126 and plain grades stood at ₹106-112 a kg.
Prices in the leaf category also witnessed a declining trend, with the market for Nilgiri brokens and whole leaf in orthodox grades tending to ease and witnessing some withdrawals. The quantity on offer was 161,000 kg.
In CTC leaf, the market was irregular and lower and the decline in price was more as the sale progressed. The quantity on offer was 6,35,000 kg.
In dust varieties, Kallyar SFD quoted the best prices of ₹161. Chamraj FOP-S (Green Tea) came to the top in leaf varieties, quoting ₹381/kg.
