New turmeric began arriving in Erode markets on Tuesday and it is fetching a good price.
RKV Ravishankar, President, Erode Turmeric Merchants Association, said: “ As on Tuesday100 bags of average quality Mysore variety turmeric arrived for sale and all the 100 bags were sold, fetching reasonable price. The price of the old crop decreased by ₹100 a quintal in the Regulated Market Committee and Erode Cooperative Marketing society. But the hybrid finger turmeric increased by ₹300 a quintal. The hybrid root variety decreased by ₹200. Overall 1,900 bags were up for sale, only 50 per cent wassold”.
He said that the new crop had begun arriving in Nizamabad and Sangli markets too. The new crop at Erode, that fetched ₹8,200 a quintal, has raised farmers' hope.
At the Erode Turmeric Merchants Association Sales yard, the finger turmeric was sold at ₹4,580-7,380 a quintal, the root variety at ₹4,332-7,099. Salem Hybrid : The finger turmeric was sold at ₹6,099₹8,109, the root variety ₹6,017-7,409. New Mysore variety turmeric: finger variety was sold at ₹5,499-8,069, the root variety at ₹5,011-7,468. At the Regulated Market Committee, the finger turmeric was sold at ₹6,809-7,839, the root turmeric at ₹6,069-7,339.
At the Erode Cooperative Marketing Society, the finger turmeric fetched ₹6,968-7,759, the root variety ₹6,787-7,489.
