Tea production in the Nilgiris, the largest tea growing district in South India, has risen by 16.26 per cent till August this calendar compared to the same period of 2013. Companies have informed the Tea Board that their production has risen to 10.94 million kg (mkg) during Jan-Aug 2014 from 9.41 mkg in the same months of 2013.
The five-year average production during the period was still lower at 9.29 mkg. In August, production rose to 0.85 mkg from 0.78 mkg in August 2013 because of encouraging soil moisture and warmth.
The five-year average production for August was 0.94 mkg. All the agro-climatic zones had received a higher rainfall in August over August 2013. This August was a favourable month for cropping as the rainfall was more than the 10-year average for the month in all agro-climatic zones in the Nilgiris.
