The country’s tea production in the first two months of current calendar increased marginally by 0.15 million kg (mkg) compared with the same period a year ago.
South India pulled down the output even as North India managed to post an increase.
North India production increased by 0.63 mkg, while in South India output was down by 0.48 mkg. Collectively, production was 35.93 mkg against 35.78 mkg
North India’s production increased to 4.97 mkg from 4.34 mkg. Assam’s output rose to 1.06 mkg from 0.93 mkg. West Bengal’s production rose to 3.73 mkg from 3.35 mkg. Most estates and factories in the North were closed for winter.
Even some auctions had to be cancelled for want of adequate volume. North India’s production is slated to pick up from April.
South India’s production dropped to 30.96 mkg from 31.44 mkg. Tamil Nadu’s output fell to 21.68 mkg from 22.35 mkg due to dry conditions in plantation areas. Kerala’s production rose to 8.41 mkg from 8.22 mkg.
