The Tea Trade Association of Cochin has urged the Centre and Tea Board to protect the interests of the trade while introducing any new system.

Every single sale gets affected due to any system failure and will adversely affect the trade as the monetary involvement is high, said JK Thomas, the association Chairman, while addressing the 24th annual general meeting.

Referring to the problems with the pan-India auctions introduced by the Tea Board, he said the association had faced a similar situation when the TMCO & E auctions were introduced.

Last year, the association had to face a lot of issues, but succeeded by organising more export promotions and advancement in domestic sales, he said.

Production in South India was at 227.47 million kg last year, he said, showing a decrease of 14.64 mkg from the previous year. Of this, Kerala produced 58.01 mkg in 2015 against 65.58 mkg.

Kochi continued to maintain its pre-eminence with 44.59 per cent of the total sales against 43.26 per cent for Coonoor and 12.15 per cent for Coimbatore.

The average price realised from the Kochi auction centre in 2015 was ₹97.93/kg against ₹72.43 for Coonoor and ₹77.08 for Coimbatore.
