Turmeric prices ruled lower on Monday despite poor arrivals and markets in Erode opening after a five-day break.

“Only 1,100 bags of medium and poor quality turmeric arrived. Traders quoted lower price and purchased limited stock. Even in the Regulated Market Committee, only 76 bags arrived for sale and just 26 were sold for lack of quality”, said RKV Ravishankar, President, Erode Turmeric Merchants Association.

He said sales were 40 per cent and this was the lowest arrival in the recent past. Arrivals over the next few days may be below 3,000 bags. He also said there prices may improve after three-four days, as traders are expecting fresh orders from North India.

Farmers said arrivals will improve before the end of this week. Hybrid turmeric decreased by ₹400 a quintal, the local finger turmeric was lower by ₹300 a quintal and the root variety by ₹150-200 a quintal. At the Erode Turmeric Merchants Association Sales yard, the finger turmeric was sold at ₹4,432-7,698 a quintal and the root variety at ₹4,318-7,048 . Salem Hybrid The finger turmeric was sold at ₹6,1087,809 and the root variety ₹6,007-7,614. At the Regulated Market Committee, the finger turmeric was sold at ₹6,089-7,996 and the root variety at ₹6,019-7,314. At the Erode Cooperative Marketing Society, the finger variety fetched ₹6,673-7,899 and the root ₹6,111-7,327.
