Spot turmeric prices at Erode increased to ₹7,000 a quintal on Tuesday on receipt of upcountry orders.
“Traders in Erode received fresh upcountry demand and so theyprocured 70 per cent of the 4,800 bags that arrived. Prices are likely to rule firm for a few days,” said R.K.V. Ravishankar, President, Erode Turmeric Merchants Association.
Merchants in North India prefer Erode variety for its price and quality. The arrival of turmeric in Nizamabad and Sangli, though high, the quality is poor when compared to Erode turmeric.
At the Erode Turmeric Merchants Association sales yard, the finger variety was sold at ₹4,909-6,999 and the root variety ₹4,599-6,689 a quintal.
Salem Hybrid: The finger variety was ₹6,269-7,889; the root variety ₹5,706-6,891. Of the 1,248 bags that arrived, 892 were sold.
At the Regulated Market committee, the finger variety quoted ₹6,250-7,138; the root variety ₹6,010-6,834. Of the 496 bags put up for sale, 494 found takers.
At the Erode Cooperative Marketing Society, the finger variety fetched ₹6,389-7,209; the root variety ₹6,209-6,909. All the 771 bags were traded.
At the Gobichettipalayam Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Society, the finger variety was sold at ₹6,417-7,099; the root variety ₹5,883-6,917. All the 226 bags were sold.
