The rupee rose by 9 paise to 55.43 against the US dollar in early trade today at the Interbank Foreign Exchange on increased capital inflows amid a stronger euro.

Forex dealers said fresh capital inflows and the euro’s gains against the dollar after the head of the European Central Bank pledged to support the troubled currency, supported the rupee.

The rupee bounced by 64 paise to close at 55.52 against the dollar yesterday on heavy selling of the American currency.

Meanwhile, the BSE benchmark index Sensex recovered sharply by 271.48 points, or 1.63 per cent, to 16,911.30.
