The benchmark Sensex lost 97 points due to weak global sentiments and uncertainty in economic growth in emerging markets.

The barometer index opened weak at 20,875 against the previous close of 20,864. It touched a high of 20,922 and low of 20,590 before closing at 20,767.

The NSE Nifty was down 24 points at 6,178.

In a volatile trade, Hero MotoCorp gained one per cent to Rs 2,088 after the company reported nine per cent rise in net profit at Rs 481 crore.

Wipro dropped four per cent to Rs 492 after the scrip hit a high of Rs 514 and low of Rs 472. The company reported 28 per cent growth in consolidated net profit.

GAIL gained four per cent to Rs 346 on media reports that the Oil Ministry has decided to exempt the company from sharing subsidy burden with state-run oil retailers.

Hindustan Zinc rose 0.5 per cent to Rs 134 after the company reported that its net profit rose seven per cent to Rs 1,640 crore.

Major gainers were Gitanjali Gems (16 per cent), Hindustan Copper (11 per cent), MMTC (9 per cent), Bank of India (5 per cent), National Aluminium (5 per cent), Bank of Baroda (5 per cent) and Oberoi Realty (5 per cent).

Losers for the day were Indiabulls Real Estate (4 per cent), JSW Energy (4 per cent), Jain Irrigation (4 per cent) and Cairn India (4 per cent).
