The benchmark BSE Sensex recovered in afternoon trade after trading in the red in the morning session. The recovery was supported by buying in capital goods and bank stocks.

The Sensex finished up 110.69 points or 0.53% at 20,811.44. Similarly, the National Stock Exchange index Nifty ended up 30.65 points or 0.50 per cent at 6,186.10.

On the Sensex, NTPC hit a new 52-week low of Rs 116.60 today. It finished down 11.43% at Rs 117.05 . Bharti Airtel, Tata Steel, TCS, and Sesa Sterlite also ended down.

The top gainers during the session were: Tata Power (+5.08%), BHEL (3.99%), Axis Bank (+3.80%) and L&T (+2.70%).

Adani Power ended flat while Reliance Power finished up over 1 per cent on reports that the electricity regulator allowed these companies to raise tariffs.

Capital goods, banks, and healthcare were the top gainers among the sectoral indices. Power index was the top loser.

Volatility was up 2.26 per cent and the India Vix was trading at 14.35.
