The Nifty and the Sensex closed in the red on global cues. The Nifty closed at 5631 down 36 points while the Sensex closed at 18471 down 148 points.
“European stocks were down on the statement of the US president that tax concessions for the high earners should expire at the beginning of next year,” said Alex Mathews, Head Research, Geojit BNP Paribas Financial Services.
The volatility index India Vix closed at 15.53 up four per cent.
Bharti Airtel, Kotak Bank, DLF, IDFC and Cairn were the top five Nifty gainers while Ultratech Cement ITC, Tata Steel, Jindal Steel and Grasim were the top losers.
