States seek to tax 68 services

Responses to Sticklish Issues dated May 31

It is disheartening to see the governments inventing the ways and means to bring new taxes and more items under the purview of existing taxes.

But what pains the common man is that despite sustained revenue increase, because of corruption and absolute mismanagement, precious resources are wasted and frittered away. The political establishment can lay broad policy guidelines and then leave the implementation to officials.

Unless corruption is stamped out and establishment downsized, the government will always be looking for ways of increasing the taxes.

S. Krithivasan, email

Service tax is a gold mine. For most of the States facing financial crunch this should be a relief.

It is reasonable. There should be an equitable distribution.

A. Jacob Sahayam, Thiruvananthapuram
