Education Columns - Write Right Blast the bombast
Is it true that we can impress people by using bombastic words? Will it get me more marks? M. Shivani Bombast can boomerang. It could mean either you do not know what you are writing and want to obfuscate or that you are flogging your knowledge. And woe betide you if your teacher does not know the meaning of even one of your bombastic words. Best, organise your thoughts clearly, and write simply. That is most effective. The anthology of Gandhiji's editorials in Young India and Harijan commends itself for just this. Even at this distance of time, the issues and his arguments are clear even to the uninitiated.
Vocabulary building
How to improve vocabulary? I tried reading every day a page of a fat dictionary, but that only made me sleepy. Smita S. It might have built your biceps, too. No, a dictionary will only give you words. More important is their usage. That you can master only by constant reading, and for some time concentrating on how words are used and sentences structured. And it is not necessary that you read only the classics. Anything well-written is good enough.
