Foreign Relations Columns - Sticklish Issues West Asia crisis
After three weeks of the war between Israel and the Lebanese militant group, Hezbollah, there seems to be no ray of hope that the conflict will come to an end. Whatever may be the provocation by the Hezbollah, in capturing two Israeli soldiers on July 12, Israel's continued heavy bombardment of Lebanon causing hundreds of civilians deaths and displacement of 8,00,000 Lebanese has been condemned by all the world leaders except, of course, the US and its allies. The UN should strongly condemn the war and ensure that the trauma is put to an end. S. Nallasivan Tirunelveli The world has condemned Israeli action; the US has called for restraint. Will it be possible to completely destroy Hezbollah? Israel, by showing least care for life is setting a dangerous trend. The UN should be able to bring an immediate ceasefire. Wiser counsel should prevail on both sides to end war and find a permanent solution to remove the trauma. A. Jacob Sahayam Thiruvananthapuram
