Education An engineering student's dilemma
I am a third year electronics student from a rural background. I am confused as to whether I should pursue a career in engineering or one in management or take up a job.
Shivakumar As an engineering student in the third year, you should start planning your career. Do you want to work after graduation or study further? If you are interested in a campus placement, you have to develop your soft skills. Employers expect a strong academic background in addition to a good personality from recruits. Before selecting the employer, decide whether you want to work with a core electronics company or a software one. If you prefer studying further, you will have to choose a field. In case you have an aptitude for electronics, you can do an MS either abroad or in India. Studying abroad will require you to first shortlist the universities based on your preferences , fellowships available, GRE/TOEFL scores and so on. To study in India, you may have to prepare for GATE. If, however, you are not keen on further studies in electronics and want to explore the management arena, you need to prepare for the MBA entrance examination. CAT requires advance preparation of about a year for which you may have to take necessary coaching. You also have the option of looking at management education after three years of work experience.
