Apple could face stiff competition from market leaders such as Nokia, Motorolo, Sony Ericsson and others. The price tag on Apple's iPhone is prohibitive. Unless the cost of the instrument is brought down, it will not significantly upset the mobile cart.

Only an electronic gadget that is user-friendly and reasonably priced will stand out in market, which is flooded with new products daily. It is hoped that features of the Apple's iPhone will improve soon with `easy-to-operate' models; the younger generation that uses the iPod will mostly begin to replace their mobiles with the Apple's iPhone.

"It will be my phone" — that is what everybody seemed to tell themselves when Steve Jobs unveiled the iPhone. However, it might take another two years before it becomes available at an affordable price in Asia, one of the largest mobile markets. Meanwhile, the iPhone might lose some of its appeal and be up against find serious competition from other vendors.

India's move towards capital account convertibility (CAC) is in the overall interest of the country. Of course, adequate safeguards will have to be put in place. With experienced Finance Ministers, both past and present, in the Cabinet and learned economists within and outside the Reserve Bank of India, we can be sure that a decision will be taken only after careful consideration.
