The Hindu Business Line : Biz leaders shine in Padma awards list

This year, of the 10 Padma Vibhushan awards given, no one from `trade and industry' was selected. And of the 32 Padma Bhushans awarded, only four from business got them. And Padma Sri awards were given mainly to writers, human rights activists and sports persons. Is is too much to confer state recognition on industry leaders who bear the stamp of excellence?

Biz leaders also need recognition from the Government for their contribution to the growth of the economy. They are also partners in the progress of the country.

Padma awards are given to honour eminent citizens. Biz leaders shine in this year's list, and they deserve the recognition. However, to make the selection process less controversial, committee comprising the President, the Prime Minister, the Leader of Opposition and the Chief Justice could be constituted.

Responses to Sticklish Issue dated January 22.

Thanks to the foresight and wisdom of the luminaries who were associated with the writing of our Constitution, it had withstood the test and rigour of more than half a century now. However, with more and more political parties stoking regionalism and no single party in command at the Centre, a time may come, may be in another decade or two, when the Constitution will have to be rewritten. As of now, the demand is premature.
