Dilemma facing a software professional

I am an engineer (2006 batch) from a reputed institution with good academic record. Through campus placement, I got into a leading IT company. Considering that our organisation is taking in a large number of new entrants year after year, I am concerned about my career prospects. I feel like resigning and preparing seriously for CAT. Getting into IIM would obviously enhance my career prospects. Please advise.

S. Shankar

Most young, bright software professionals face such a predicament. While your passion for fast-track career growth is appreciated, you have to take a cautious and considered decision. Being in a reputed software company, you should try to use the current opportunity fully, sharpening and consolidating your technical, functional and presentation skills besides understanding the nuances of customer relationship management.

Getting into any of the IIMs should take you another year or so. By then you would also have been reasonably exposed to the real world. This would broaden your vision and you can relate well to your management studies. If you are in continuous employment during this period, it will help you in your placement after passing out of IIM.

It is not advisable to leave the job merely to prepare for CAT. Resigning a good job is easy but getting one is difficult. You can be successful in CAT even while being in employment, provided you start preparation forthwith. Join any of the reputed institutions offering coaching for CAT.
