Take a few minutes off your PC to see if you have enough leg space at your desk. For, in a cramped place, "your legs may develop veinous problems and sciatic pain along the sides," writes Bharat Thakur in Desktop Yoga, from Wisdom Tree (www.wisdomtreeindia.com). "Watching the screen for hours on end, your eyesight is bound to weaken and affect your brain and blood circulation. The chances of migraine occurring are also very high. A frozen shoulder could also be a gift from your desktop... " What a frightening scenario! But before you think of running away from your computer, Thakur offers a programme to help you be more creative and productive, and also get `good sleep at night'. The secret is, pause. Not to pick up a cup of coffee or smoke; nor to toss office politics in your mind, or emptily gossip. But to practise a few yogic techniques laid out in the book. "Just three pauses in your day would gift you a smile on your face for all time to come," he assures. "If you are motivated enough, take a short break every 40 minutes while at your computer and see the difference this makes." Thakur dedicates a chapter each to the neck, shoulders, back, arms, legs, and eyes. A chapter titled `neuro-muscular locks' is about bandhas, which help in changing `the internal pressure in the body', and also influence the secretion of `primary endocrine glands ensuring that moods like irritability, depression, indecisiveness and nervousness do not negatively affect our working life'. In the final chapter, the author talks about breathing. "A simple technique like paying attention to your breath at all times will result in a dramatic drop in your stress levels," he counsels. Rejuvenating read.
