The issue of the disgraceful performance by the Indian team at World Cup 2007 seem to have ended in a whimper. The BCCI has not taken any stern steps to refurbish the image of the Indian team.

Cricket is a game demanding focused attention. The permission given by the BCCI for three endorsements will definitely distract the attention of the players to matters other than cricket since endorsements are lucrative. Why should the players, who are compensated handsomely, be permitted to take up jobs other than cricket?

Unfortunately, the Indian cricket scene has become player-dominated and over the years and BCCI has done precious little to wield effective control. The larger interests of the game and national pride should be the two ultimate goals for BCCI and anyone else associated with cricket. With all kinds of advertisements, endorsements and substantial remuneration, etc., the players' interests are obviously elsewhere. The BCCI certainly needs to assert itself by taking appropriate action.

Following the shameful exit of India from the World Cup, the BCCI, in a bid to reform, announced some performance-linked bonuses. The board also limited the endorsements to three. Cricketers, instead of worrying about the endorsements, must devote their attention to the game.

The debacle of the Indian team at the World Cup has awakened the BCCI to the dangers of our players doing more advertisement work than cricket.

The Working Committee has resolved that the players should not sign for more than three endorsements. The decision has evoked a mixed response from the players, sponsors and ad agencies.

While there should be some restrictions in endorsements and interviews for the players it may be done with a mutual dialogue between the concerned parties.

BCCI has put a cap on players' endorsements for immediate implementation. Though the move was decided without discussing with the players, it will not affect the senior players as it is to be implemented in phases.

Advertisers make endorsements taking into account the brand value of the player and the synergy between him and the brand. Professional fees together with bonuses for wins and draws will help make the players torchbearers for the country.

Owing to the manipulation of "professional" criminals, derivatives have fallen from the grace. Derivatives should be made mandatory, even for applications of 5,000 shares. Applicants should declare PAN, demat account number and bank account numbers and depository participants should check the first and last name in each application to eliminate benami accounts. Only a regulator can track fund flows from FIIs and local investors into the shares of the companies.

Investment advisors are responsible for the sudden spurt in penny stocks. Equity deals in these stocks are struck because of "valuation mismatch" between buyers and sellers. And these stocks quote unusual premiums.

The real estate boom — due to special emphasis on housing and infrastructure — has sent the stock prices of many construction companies skyrocketing. The managements of some of these companies themselves acknowledge that their shares are quoted very high. The credit rating process has arrested the growth in the number and values of IPOs in real estate sector. If the depository participants fail to detect benami transactions they should be punished by cancelling their licences.
