Mobile versus plastic cards

Responses to Sticklish Issues dated May 21

The versatility of cell phone technology is truly amazing. Booking railway tickets, sending e-mails and, now, for making payments. But major modifications will have to be made to the existing technology. With cyber crimes on the rise, the technology should seriously look into this aspect too.

*T. R. Anandan, Coimbatore

From cash to plastic cards and now to mobile-based payment systems, the revolution is spreading across the world. Plastic cards are in vogue now. With two leading credit card service providers and many banks also offering cards, it is a virtual explosion in the market. Everyone is willing to throw in freebies. The technology for card payments has advanced over the years, but still, all the operations require manual handling. Payments through mobile permits one to make payments even on the move.

With better password and other security features, mobile phones have less security concerns.

With disposable incomes on the rise, such technologically enabled systems that save time and energy will certainly grow.
