Customer is far smarter than one thinks

Mr R Subramanium is Managing Director, Subhiksha Trading Services, India’s largest chain of supermarkets-cum-pharmacy/telecom stores. Subhiksha operates close to 700 outlets in nine States and over 50 cities. Subhiksha focuses on the concept of constant sustainable low pricing so that regular customers are able to buy with the assurance that they stand to save on any given basket of household goods on any day.

Here’s Mr Subramanium’s take on four questions from Business Line:

Two things that my education/training taught me:

The importance of looking at data dispassionately.

Ability to break down an issue into its component pieces so as to be able to attack them.

Two things I learnt from my work/real life:

Need to empathise with the team — in their moments of joy and pain.

The customer is far smarter than one normally gives him credit for.

One quality I look for the most in a new recruit:

Willingness to learn and work hard.

A book that I read recently:

Working thro Bhagavad Gita.
