Work Life Columns - Sticklish Issues Stress among young workaholics
Workaholism has both positive and negative connotations. The positive aspect is that the young are motivated, enjoy their work and are committed to meeting deadlines. The employer is happy, and is willing to pay higher remuneration and is anxious to retain the employee. But workaholics can be more productive if they take care of stress, which will cause burnout sooner than later. There are many reasons for stress. Workaholics lack a balanced approach to life. They neglect the family and are ignorant of the virtues of family life. Further, they ignore their own health resulting in physical and mental stress. Here are some suggestions to overcome stress injuries: Add physical and mental exercises such as yoga and meditation to your daily routine for at least one hour a day. Make it a point to spend at least 30 minutes every day with your family. Take a break for about 10 minutes after every two hours of continuous work. Learn to observe and enjoy nature. Observe people below your level occasionally and their way of leading life happily. Add humour in your conversations. Also, read and enjoy humour features. If yours is a high-value job, enjoy doing smaller things too . K.V. Rao, Bangalore
Stress occurs mostly because of brain fatigue and this can be avoided by proper planning, meditation and yoga. There is a false impression amongst youngsters that yoga is a time killer. Companies should encourage employees to practise yoga as this will help them overcome stress in their day-to-day life. T. S. Sundareswaran, New Delhi
Youngsters these days get high-paying jobs through campus selection. They work at odd timings, which affect their health, food habits etc. They often end up eating junk food, affecting their haemoglobin levels and most of them also develop high blood pressure. It is time these youngsters paid attention to their health. U. Ramakanth Pai, Kochi
The modern work and life patterns are increasingly causing stress-related problems. Rushing deadlines and gushing blood have become common factors leading to stress and stroke. This is a real irony of the modern system that is actually supposed to make our lives easier. What’s worse, stress can affect people across age groups. From youngsters to recent retirees, anybody can be a victim of work-induced health problems. While our wages are on a rise, our body takes a downhill tumble. The key is to practise relaxation and time management techniques in our everyday lives to combat this potent enemy. Pulkit Soni, Indore
Work seems to have caught up to such an extent that it is pushing employees into becoming workaholics; the work scene was just the opposite hitherto. Pranshu Singh, Bangalore
One may become a workaholic because of various reasons, such as greed, ambition, addiction, job conditions, challenges, compulsion, for relief from other problems, and so on. But workaholism is becoming more of a disease than as a mark of diligence. It causes both mental and physical strain, as also family problems that can affect the future generation too. The BPO industry, for instance, is one among the many that contributes to the creation of workaholics. But wherever it is found action needs to be taken for relief. Man and woman may have to toil to eat but toiling should not eat them up. A. Jacob Sahayam, Thiruvananthapuram
