Sports Columns - Sticklish Issues Raining cash on Team India
While the players of T20 deserve all the praise for their brilliant victory, the hype in the media has been a case of overdoing appreciation. While the glamour and money have increased for the players, the efficiency in the field has decreased.
*T.R. Anandan, Chennai
Cricket evokes deep passions and sentiments in the sub-continent. Any India-Pakistan match is seen almost as a proxy war between the two countries. Cricket has come a long way beginning with test matches. With direct telecast, advertisements and campaigns, a lot of money is being made and, obviously, a chunk goes to the players in various forms. The reception accorded to the Indian team in Mumbai clearly shows that the game has caught the imagination of the masses and the classes.
Krithivasan, e-mail The hype and hoopla surrounding Team India’s euphoric win in the T20 World Cup is exaggerated. True, it was an outstanding achievement considering won without the stalwarts. But in our country, anything excess or inadequate is hugely publicised leaving no room for a level-playing field. Sunil Gadepalli, Hyderabad
The raining of cash on T20 heroes may be right as long as the public exchequer money is not used. The Government on its part can bestow awards such as Arjuna and not such cash prizes. R. Swaminathan, Tiruchi Even the most benevolent fans including me are being provoked to react sharply due to the financial rewards showered on our cricketers. And the timing that the BCCI adopted (remember the birth of a rival organisation led by Kapil Dev) shows that the main intention is to politicise the issue. The largesse of State governments in doling out money deserves condemnation especially when so many economic and social problems need to be sorted out. The big party could have waited till the completion of series against Australia. K.V. Rao, Bangalore
Reponses to Sticklish Issue dated September 24 It is a welcome decision from Mr T. R. Baalu to wait for the Supreme Court verdict on the Ram Sethu issue. It would be prudent and appropriate for the Government to re-examine all aspects of the Sethusamudram project before going ahead. The destruction of the Ram Sethu will have disastrous socio-economic and environmental repercussions. Thousands of fisherfolk will be displaced as they will loss their livelihood due to this project. While the heavy vessels may find it difficult to pass through it, the high usage costs compared to the fuel costs makes the project economically unviable. Several environmentalists and ecologists have pointed out that destruction of the Rama Sethu could lead to several changes inside the ocean. Hence the consequences arising out of the destruction of the Sethu should be debated first. It is also a fact that the demolition of the Sethu will be a loss to our cultural heritage.
