Human Resources Columns - Career Crossroads From marketing to software I am a marketing executive with an engineering background. I have four years’ experience in a reputed consumer product company. I am interested in entering the software sector as a functional consultant. I would like to be in an emerging domain which has good prospects. Kindly advise what I should do to achieve my objective. Amit Bhargava Considering your background and your aspiration to be in software consultancy, it would be better for you to start your career in the functional domain of marketing itself. Considering the various CRM (customer relationship management) products available in the market and their prospects and long-term sustainability, it would be advisable for you to go in for certification as a SAP CRM consultant. The reason is obvious. As many of the enterprises, both locally and globally, have already implemented ERP (enterprise resource planning) solutions, the next best thing for them to improve their profitability is to go in for a versatile and robust CRM project implementation. In my view, SAP CRM has tremendous potential. It provides comprehensive solutions in an integrated manner covering the entire spectrum comprising customer interaction centre, service marketing, channel management, mobile services, B2B and B2C. Of these, you can choose your areas of interest for certification. Software companies also expect you to have end-to-end CRM implementation for better positioning. If you could show some patience and perseverance, you can surely make your mark as a certified SAP CRM consultant. While implementing the project, you can also effectively use your functional knowledge while integrating SAP CRM with the backend SAP ERP. S.
