People Columns - 60 Seconds Chief! The only true failure is the person who gives up trying
Vivek Mehra Vivek Mehra is the Managing Director & CEO, Sage Publications India Pvt Ltd. He has a Ph.D. in chemical engineering, an M.A. in Marketing from Columbia University, New York and a B.Sc. in Textile Technology from the Fashion Institute of Technology, New York. Here’s his take on four questions from Business Line: Two things my education/training taught me: My primary education was in India, while my college education and the beginning of my working life were in the US. Experiencing the sharp divide in the respective cultures taught me a lot more than what I learnt at college. While my formal education played a major role in opening doors, it was the work culture whose foundation rested in the US that prepared me for the future. While I may have acquired a lot of knowledge about my chosen field, I have still a lot to learn. And the learning continues even today. Two things I learnt from my work/real life: Life is the greatest teacher of all. It has been aptly described as the ‘school of hard knocks’ that teaches you the true meaning of the words perseverance, patience, adaptability and failure. Life is full of challenges and every failed attempt should be viewed as a stepping stone to success. To me, the only true failure in life is the person who gives up trying. One quality I look for the most in a new recruit: Most new recruits tend to rely on their education to get them through. While it is true that there is no substitute for formal education, one must exude a desire to learn and the hunger to pursue success diligently.
