Nothing succeeds like teamwork

Dr Kushagra Katariya

Dr Kushagra Katariya is the CEO of Artemis Health Sciences. Dr Katariya, a cardiothoracic surgeon who trained and practised in the US for the past 18 years, returned to India to start this new healthcare company which opened its first hospital in Gurgaon five months ago. His interests include off pump cardiac surgery, thoracic oncology and health care development and research. Here’s his take on four questions from Business Line:

Two things that my education/training taught me:

Hope for the best and prepare for the worst. This works well whether one thinks of cardiothoracic surgery or entrepreneurial ventures. It allows you to continue to strive for better than what you expect while making sure that no derailing surprises occur.

Do it right the first time unless you have three times more time to fix it later. There is never as good a time to do it correctly, accurately and completely like the first time.

Two things I learnt from my work/real life:

Nothing succeeds like teamwork. Sure, that leads to the more conformal adage of nothing succeeds like success. You can’t do it all alone, it’s almost always the folks around you that cause you to sink or swim.

Create change or suffer it, a piece of advice from a long time ago. Change is the only constant so you need to embrace it and lead from the front.

One quality I look for the most in a new recruit:

Burning enthusiasm. Way more important to me than experience.

A book that I read recently:

The Essays of Warren Buffet: Lessons for Corporate America, by Warren Buffet.
