Dr B. S. Tiruvadanan We take annual maintenance contracts (AMCs) for almost all the gadgets we use. “Why not, then, look at the need for a similar contract on a daily level, say, a DMC or daily maintenance contract, to ensure good health?” asks Dr B. S. Tiruvadanan, a Chennai-based consultant surgeon, specialising in gastroenterology. “Today’s life is characterised by speed. In fact, so much speed that we don’t have time for ourselves,” he rues. “The ‘contract,’ therefore, is essentially about giving oneself the time. Time to take the mind off worries, to exercise and keep fit, and to think what really one wants to pursue,” explains the doctor, during an interaction with Business Line. “Much of the pain that we now find among those who suffer can be prevented,” avers Dr Mallika Tiruvadanan, who heads Lakshmi Pain and Palliative Care Clinic in the city. “We can consciously adopt a lifestyle that results in the least pain, because many of our problems are self-inflicted,” she adds. A 20-30 minute routine built into everyday schedule can make a lot of difference to one’s health, assures Dr Tiruvadanan. “It is not necessary that everyone has to go to a gym or work-out on a treadmill,” he explains. “If you can walk to work, do so. Or use the steps instead of the lift. More important, don’t take work back home.” One other tip that Dr Tiruvadanan shares is to park the car closest to the exit and farthest from the entry, to ensure that both ways you walk the most, in that premises. Organisations can promote the culture of exercise woven into routine, especially considering that today’s executive has a sedentary work-life, reasons Dr Mallika. On an individual level, Dr Mallika recommends, that we need to choose what to eat, when to eat, and how to eat. How? “That is, not gulping down,” elaborates Dr Tiruvadanan. “Give a good gap of about four hours between meals.
