Income Tax Columns - For the Asking Tax on arrears My mother gets a family pension of Rs 4,500 a month. She got arrears of Rs 2,20,000 reckoned from 1986 that includes the period when my father was the recipient. Now, does my mother have to pay tax even on the portion of arrears attributable to her husband? Does she have to obtain a PAN? K. Ramakrishnan, emailBut for the arrears, she would not have been required to pay any tax and file returns. The arrears have bloated her income beyond the tax-free limit. The fact that a part of the pension is relatable to the period when her husband was alive does not make any difference because the arrears have accrued after his death and accrued in her favour. In the event, the tax liability is hers. She can of course get the relief under Section 89. She has to apply for PAN because the return has to give the PAN details. S.
