Railways Columns - For the Asking Privatise railways? Can Railways be privatised? If yes, is it desirable? Yukteshwar Giri, Bhubaneshwar Railway systems across the globe are run by the state. The British government gave up its privatisation experiment no sooner than it had started it. Indian Railways is the world’s largest employer and given its size and scale of operations, there is no way it can be sold to a single private entity. Indeed, nobody in the private sector would have the appetite for acquiring the Indian Railways lock, stock and barrel. The Railways admittedly are the only means of cheap mass transportation. In private hands, it could result in steep periodic increase in prices for which the nation is not prepared. But there are certain areas where private participation can be allowed. For example, rolling stock and equipment may be outsourced from others. As it is, the Railways has in-house construction and quality inspection companies. There is no reason why construction and other activities cannot be carried on more and more under the public-private partnership (PPP) mode. In short, the Railways should remain a government department but with active participation from the private sector. S. MURLIDHARAN More Stories on : Railways | Disinvestment | For the Asking
