Primero Skills & Training, a private skilling company, aims to skill and train at least 30,000 life insurance agents on a pan-India basis this fiscal, a top official said.

The company is looking to do this in the top six cities and is also in advance stage of getting into a tie-up with a private life insurer for absorbing the skilled agents, Jayanta Das, Managing Director, told BusinessLine .

Primero’s Delhi centre is authorised by the National Skill Development Corporation to impart skills in banking, financial services and insurance (BFSI). In India, life insurance agents get commission from insurers for products sold through them. They are not employees of life insurers.

Das said Primero would impart skills for both Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY) and also IRDA certification. To be an insurance agent, PMKVY certification is not enough; one would have to pass an IRDA (insurance regulator) test.

As a skilling company, Primero focuses on the bottom-of-the-pyramid people and caters to three main sectors — financial services, agriculture and hospitality.

Financial services will be a key focus area for Primero’s expansion this year, he said.

Since starting operations in October 2015, Primero has completed skilling of 10,000 people, according to Das.
