Veteran journalist and former Deputy Editor of Malayalam daily Mathrubhumi T. Venugopal died at his residence at nearby Beypore this morning, family sources said.

82-year-old Venugopal leaves behind his wife and two children.

Venugopal joined Mathrubhumi in 1952 after completing his studies at Kozhikode Zamorins College and Kerala Varma College, Thrissur, and worked in the newspaper organisation till 1988.

He was the recipient of the first Swadeshabhimani-Kesari award instituted by the Kerala Government. He had also bagged M V Paili award and Sahithya Academy award.

His major writings are ‘Rajyasnehiyaya Rajyadrohi’ on Swadeshabhimani Ramakrishna Pillai, ‘Nattu Vishesham’ jointly written with Thomas Jacob and ‘Vimarshana Sahithyam’.

He was also the General Secretary of KUWJ on three occasions.
