Father of the Indian Constitution Dr B.R. Ambedkar was voted as the ‘Greatest Indian’ in a poll spearheaded by History TV18 and CNN IBN.
Nearly two crore votes were cast making him the most popular Indian figure since the launch of the initiative.
He also garnered the second highest jury votes in the three-pronged process which gave equal weightage to the popular vote, a jury and an on-ground poll.
Others who made it to the top 10 list included Jawaharlal Nehru, Mother Teresa and Sachin Tendulkar.
Ajay Chacko, President, A+E Networks | TV18, said: “History TV18’s attempt has been to create interest across generations in the subject in an informal and entertaining way. This partnership with CNN IBN enables History TV18 to bring forth the inspiring figures over the years, who have had the maximum impact on the country's present and future.”
He added that India has always been identified as a cricket and Bollywood crazy nation, “so it feels heartening to find nation builders and leaders topping the list”.

History TV18: Negation of Ambedkar, The Greatest Indian in Subtle Way
I am in total disagreement with the verdict passed by the greatest Jury of 28 Members (perhaps if my memory doesn’t distrust me) in the survey made in connection with Who is the Greatest Indian after Mahatma Gandhi. My objections are on two grounds: one in retrospect and the other in present.
The first: this survey says that Gandhi was the greatest Indian which I totally deny on the ground that each of the persons included in the top 50 list is as valuable as anybody else. They all have contributed in their respective fields; they all are great in themselves undubiously. There is no question of creating an unnecessarily assumed conviction that Mahatma Gandhi is the Greatest Indian. (You would have understood had you included Gandhi Ji in the list prepared.) I ask, “Why has the assumption been made as a rendezvous? Who is the authoritative in Gandhi’s being already the GREATEST?” If this survey was going on Jury’s e
I agree with the views of Mr Praveen kumar,Mr Gandhi was kept out because they knew he would not make it to the top,as he was not or never was or will be the greatest. It is the govt. and the elite media that has created/projected the gandhi from our school days .
