Industry representatives have suggested to Railway Minister DV Sadananda Gowdaa a mega plan of capacity enhancements for the Indian Railways with investments worth $2.5-3 trillion.

In a plan presented to the Minister, industry body Assocham has proposed the creation of seven high-speed freight network corridors for transporting goods back and forth from manufacturing to consumption centres and from all major ports within a specified timeframe of 36 hours.

Assocham has also suggested that a regulatory body be set up soon and legal provisions put in place to fix all charges that the Railways levies for various services it provides.

Other recommendations include transformation of the railway porter service to provide passenger-friendly services and introduction of efficient trolleys designed to cater to luggage transport, new type of high load wagons, comfortable coaches and latest signalling and electrical items.
