The 17 coaches of the accident-affected train no.16859 Chennai Egmore – Mangaluru Express are expected to reach Podanur at 4.30 pm.
A press release by the Palakkad division of Southern Railway said here that five coaches of train no.16859 Chennai Egmore – Mangaluru Express derailed near Puvanur at around 2 am on Friday. In this accident, two AC 3-tier coaches, one AC first class-cum 2-tier coach, one unreserved coach and one luggage-cum-brake van coach have been derailed.
Consequent to the derailment, train services in the section have been diverted or cancelled. It said that the accident-affected train had left Vriddhachalam station at 7.25 am with its remaining 17 coaches. It is expected to reach Podanur at 4.30 pm, the release said.
Of the 39 passengers affected in the accident, 35 left after being given the first aid. The remaining four injured passengers are undergoing treatment -- one at Cuddalore Government Hospital and three at Government Hospital in Vriddhachalam, the release added.
