A three-day national symposium on ‘Bioenergy for Sustainable Development – The potential role of sugar crops,’ is scheduled between June 23 and 25 at The Residency, Coimbatore.
The Sugarcane Breeding Institute, Coimbatore, is organising the symposium in association with the Society for Sugarcane Research and Development.
The symposium is to be inaugurated by the Vice-Chancellor of the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University K Ramasamy.
Over 200 delegates from across the country, including scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, industry representatives and researchers from universities, are expected to attend the event.
Director of the Sugarcane Breeding Institute N Vijayan Nair said the workshop is being organised to sensitise stakeholders about various issues and options concerning bio-energy.
“It will provide a common platform for technology developers, stakeholders, policy makers and other players involved in the bio-energy sector,” he said.
The participants would deliberate on emerging issues in sugarcane production and the sugar and energy sectors with a focus on second-generation ethanol, carbon footprint, co-generation and policy issues during the technical sessions, he said.
