A crucial meeting of the Congress Working Committee on Monday will finalise the schedule for the election of party’s President.

The party’s Vice-President Rahul Gandhi is set to be elevated as President without any contest and he will be able to nominate the members of the Working Committee and presidents of various States soon after the appointment.

Lok Sabha member Mullappalli Ramachandran, the returning officer for the polls, has given a proposal to the leadership on the schedule.

A source indicated that according to his proposal, the CWC meeting can fix three days’ time beginning Tuesday or Wednesday to file the nomination papers.

One day will be given for withdrawal of nominations and another day for scrutiny.

Since the party is not expecting any nominations other than Rahul Gandhi's, the entire process will be over in the first week of December.

This means that Rahul's elevation will take place before the first phase of the Gujarat Assembly polls.

A section in the party believes that Rahul Gandhi had a greater acceptance in the poll-bound State than the 2014 Lok Sabha elections and argues that Rahul’s anointment will be beneficial for the party in Gujarat.

The Election Commission had set a deadline of 31 December for completing the organisational polls in Congress.
