The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting hopes to launch a new Doordarshan channel dedicated to the North-East region later this year.

The channel will focus on youth with contemporary entertainment and informative shows besides focusing on the diverse culture of the North-East, officials said, adding that the Ministry hoped to launch this channel named ArunPrabha from Arunachal Pradesh by August this year.

The government had first proposed setting up this dedicated channel in 2014.

Film institute

The government will also kick-start a temporary campus of the proposed film institute in Itanagar, which will begin operations with the introduction of a 10-week short-term course by May 15.

The Ministry has already set the ball rolling for setting up of the Film and Television Institute of India in Arunachal Pradesh, with an investment of ₹200 crore, which will be set up under the aegis of the Satyajit Ray Film & Television Institute, Kolkata.

Information and Broadcasting Minister Venkaiah Naidu discussed these initiatives at a review meeting of programme and policies in the North-East in Guwahati on Tuesday.

IIMC at Aizwal

Naidu said the proposed film institute in Arunachal Pradesh and a permanent campus of Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC) at Aizwal would provide quality training and act as talent creators and talent hubs in the region. The IIMC Aizwal campus is expected to be ready by March next year. It will also focus on launching contemporary short duration courses for students and specialised courses for journalists.

The North-East region has been on the Ministry’s radar in recent times The Ministry believes it is essential to develop content in local dialects and languages to reach out to diverse sections of society.

In line with this objective, the Ministry has earlier this year decided to increase the subsidy to 90 per cent for setting up community radio stations in the region.

Even while auctioning the second batch of private FM Radio phase-III frequencies, the Ministry had kept a lower reserve price for North-Eastern states and border areas. Already, 13 private FM channels are operational in the region and another 48 channels in 18 cities will be up for auction in the coming days.
