The Centre is planning amendments to the Right to Education Act (RTE) to reintroduce the pass-fail system in school education, Union HRD Minister, Prakash Javadekar said.
Enabling provisions are being made in the RTE amendment bill that will allow states to conduct examinations in class V and class VIII; and detain students if they fail.
Under the current provisions of the RTE, no student can be detained till class VIII.
The Union Minister was hopeful of the amendment bills to the RTE Act being passed in the current monsoon session of the Parliament.
Speaking on the sidelines of an ICC program, Javadekar said: “At least 25 States have supported the reintroduction of pass-fail system.”
No common test for Engineering
The Union Minister, meanwhile, added that there was no plan to introduce a common engineering entrance exams as of yet.
The common engineering entrance exam was expected to be on the lines of the National Eligibility and Entrance Test (NEET).
“We will take a call on having a common engineering entrance test depending on the NEET results. We will take a call accordingly,” he said.
