As part of its green initiative, the Ministry of Road, Transport and Highways will plant trees along 1,500 km of highways on July 1. This will be part of the Rs 5,000-crore initiative earmarking 1 per cent of the about Rs 5 lakh crore projects for plantation and transplantation.

Reserve Bank of India offices will remain open on July 1 to facilitate public transactions and settlement of market transactions. Normally, the RBI remains closed for public transactions on July 1 every year on account of annual closing of accounts. The Reserve Bank's accounting year runs from July 1 to June 30.

Beginning today fliers will be able to enjoy a lower fee structure for excess checked-in baggage. The government had announced a rate of Rs 100 per additional kilogram of checked-in baggage from the existing Rs 300 per kg. Implementation of the reduced rates, which was to become effective from June 15, had to be deferred as airlines had sought more time to upgrade their systems.

Air India and Jet Airways passengers will be able to check-in for domestic and international flights from both New Delhi as well as Shivaji Stadium stations of the Capital’s Airport Express Line from July 1. Earlier, only Air India passengers had the option to check-in at New Delhi station of the Airport Express Line, and that too for domestic sector and a few Gulf countries.

Ending a 32-year wait, the indigenous fighter jet, the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA), Tejas, is to be inducted into the Air Force on Friday. This will be the first version of the jets. Two successive improved versions, with better radars, missiles and greater war-fighting abilities, are slated to be inducted by 2019. A CAG report in May 2015 said Rs 10,397.11 crore had been spent on the development of the plane that was originally scheduled to be inducted around 15 years ago. The final operation clearance (FOC) of the jet is expected by December this year.
