All the nine unions of the banking industry are to proceed with their one-day strike today under the leadership of the United Forum of Bank Unions. About 10 lakh employees and officers of public sector banks will observe a strike across India. The unions that will join the nationwide strike include AIBEA, NCBE, BEFI, NOBW, AIBOC, AIBOC, NOBO. The unions are against the proposed merger of State Bank associate banks with SBI, privatisation of IDBI and other banking reforms that the government has initiated.

Fishermen association presidents in Tamil Nadu have been invited by the Foreign Secretary for talks in Delhi today. The discussions would centre around frequent arrests and alleged attacks on the state's fishermen by the Sri Lankan Navy. Besides 13 fishermen association representatives, 37 officials, including those from the fisheries department, navy and coast guard, would participate in the talks. The talks would pave the way for fishing in traditional areas in the Palk Strait without any conflict with the Sri Lankan navy or fishermen.

In a bid to make the proposed workers' meeting of Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi in Lucknow today a success, the party is planning to collect over 60,000 activists from across UP, at least seven from every block, for which targets have been assigned to all district Congress committee (DCC) presidents. Said to be the brainchild of the party's strategist, Prashant Kishore, the move aims at mobilising the maximum number of party activists before the elections for a direct contact with Rahul Gandhi and other leaders. Priyanka Gandhi is likely to be present at the meeting.

Liquor baron Vijay Mallya has been asked to appear before a PMLA court here on July 29 in connection with its money laundering probe against him in an alleged bank loan fraud case with the special judge saying he has "absconded" and was "concealing" himself to avoid arrest. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) today published a court-issued proclamation against Mallya for appearance before the special PMLA court on July 29.

The Annual Group Leadership Conference would be held against the backdrop of increased challenges for the group including, asset sales by group companies, a billion-dollar award by London arbitration court in Docomo dispute, and a failed sale by Tata Steel of its loss-making business in the UK.
