The fifth phase of polling in the West Bengal Assembly elections gets underway in the districts of South 24 Parganas, Kolkata South and Hooghly on Saturday. Several contingents of central and state police forces have been deployed in these districts to maintain order. The sixth and final phase of polling in the state will happen on May 5. Counting of votes is scheduled for May 19.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is to launch the ‘Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojna’ in Ballia district of Uttar Pradesh on Sunday. He is expected to announce distribution of 5 crore free LPG connections to Below Poverty Line families during his visit.

The inter-ministerial Telecom Commission will meet on Saturday to discuss plans for the upcoming spectrum auctions that will take place in July. The government plans to auction all the major bands, including premium airwaves such as 700MHz.

The Tricolour will be permanently installed atop the Vice-Regal Lodge in Delhi University on Sunday on the occasion of the university’s Foundation Day. Three sitting Supreme Court judges, Justice Rohinton Fali Nariman, Justice Arjan Kumar Sikri and Justice Madan Lokur, all alumni of the university, have been invited for the event. This follows the decision by the Vice-Chancellors of all central universities to install the national flag “prominently and proudly” on their campuses.

Aam Aadmi Party leader and rights activist Soni Sori and JNU Students’ Union vice-president Shehla Rashid are likely to attend a public meeting in Hyderabad on Saturday, to be organised by the Civil Liberties Committee, Telangana on the topic ‘Civil democratic rights — State oppression’. Radhika Vemula, mother of the deceased scholar from University of Hyderabad, Rohith Vemula, apart from UoH faculty members K.Y. Ratnam and Tathagat Sen Gupta, will be among the speakers at the meeting.
