Veteran freedom fighter and senior journalist Parakala Pattabhi Rama Rao passed away at his residence here this morning, family sources said.

Rao, 93, is survived by two sons.

Born on November 16, 1920, in Kavitam village of Andhra Pradesh’s West Godavari district, Rao, as a student union leader participated in many patriotic programmes.

As a Communist party member, he also suffered jail convictions by the British Government.

Pattabhi Rama Rao commenced his media career as a correspondent for Prajasakthi , a weekly by Communist party in 1942.

He joined Visalandhra , a Telugu Daily, in 1952 and served there as a member in editorial Board till 1992. Later, till 2002, he served as the Editor of a weekly magazine Communism .

He also wrote several books on national and international issues and also on women and social issues in Telugu. Rao received Soviet Union’s Nehru Award in 1981.

Many journalists from the city and political leaders from various parties visited his house to pay tributes to him.
