The Centre is all set to crack the whip on those who sought to violate child labour norms.

The Government will move the amendment proposal to Child Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Bill in the forthcoming Budget session, which will provide authorities a bigger handle to deal with violations of this Act.

Union Labour Minister Bandaru Dattatreya said the chief features of the Bill included prohibition of employment of children below 14 years and stricter and enhanced punishment for violations of the Act.

Besides the legislative action, the Ministry has also taken project-based action by launching National Child Labour Project for rehabilitating working children, which covers 270 districts in 21 States. 

“As on date, more than 10.25 lakh children have been mainstreamed into formal education system since the beginning of the project, out of which three lakhs are from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana,” he said here today.

The Government will also move the amendment proposal Factories Act, 1948, besides introducing the Draft Bill on Small Factories (Regulation of Employment and Condition of Service) in the Budget session.

He said the new Small Factories Bill was aimed at regulating factories with workforce less than 40.

After receiving the views of all stakeholders including general public, the Bill will be placed before the Cabinet for approval and subsequently in Parliament during the budget session, he added.
