Congress president Rahul Gandhi has embarked on a three-day roadshow in the Hyderabad-Karnataka region is to regain its lost bastion.

The region, which was the party’s pocket borrough since Independence, switched loyalties after the illegal mining scam broke.

Now, the Congress is highlighting all it did in the last four-year-nine-month rule in Karnataka, as also the Special Package for the region formulated by the party-led UPA government. The package offers special treatment for the region in the areas of education, jobs, health and funds for regional development. He said the Modi government had failed to follow up with and not allotted funds to the backward region.

Rahul Gandhi’s roadshow began from Hospet in Ballari and is expected to go up to Bidar, covering the districts of Ballari, Koppal, Raichur, Yadgir, Kalburgi and Bidar.

Rally

Addressing a community meeting in backward Koppal district on Sunday, Rahul Gandhi said it is now left to the people to decide whether Karnataka should ensure another term for the Congress or vote for the corrupt BJP.

He said Chief Minister Siddaramiah had given a forward looking government that was pro-poor and had made maximum allotment of funds to the SC, ST and OBC besides other backward people. It had created jobs and brought in major industrial investments.

At Sindhaoor, Rahul Gandhi took a dig at Prime Minister, saying: “Had Sachin Tendulkar batted looking at the wicket-keeper, could he have scored a single run? Our Prime Minister is a cricketer who looks at the wicket-kepeer and does not know where the ball is coming from.”

Speaking at Karatagi in Raichur district, Rahul Gandhi said: “I would like to remind PM Modi that his term has almost ended and he should work to fulfill his promises. After the end of his term, he needs to tell the people what he has achieved.”

Rahul Gandhi said the Congress in Karnataka, led by Siddaramaiah, follows the principles of Guru Basavanna.
