A Central Bureau of Investigation team has caught two income tax officials red-handed while accepting ₹10 lakh as bribe.
The team arrested Assistant Commissioners P Jose Kunhippalu and Vincent Joseph in Thrissur on Saturday. The officials had allegedly told a granite businessman that his I-T dues of ₹50 lakh would be reduced to ₹1 lakh if he paid ₹10 lakh to them.
The businessman tipped off the CBI anti-corruption wing in Kochi. The CBI team laid a trap and the businessman was asked to hand over ₹10 lakh to the officials at a second-floor apartment in Thrissur.
When the CBI team showed up, the officials tossed out the bundles of currency, which were recovered from the ground.
The CBI also found cash and several bottles of expensive liquor from the apartment. The two have also been booked by the Excise Department for possessing liquor beyond the permissible quantity.
