A couple of years ago, he taught the poor carpet weavers of a landlocked Afghanistan on how to profitably sell their stuff in Atlanta, USA, instead of involving middlemen of the port city of Karachi—and, in turn, earned the wrath of Pakistani traders and a few dire threats. He even managed to turn one of those who threatened him into a businessman!

Now, he will train Pakistanis on how to do business, globally!

Ahmedabad-based trade consultant Jagat Shah will be training members of the Dawoodi Bohra Jamaat in Karachi this week at a new industrial park, to be inaugurated by Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharief.

Al-Tijaarat al- Rabeha, a trust administrating and managing the affairs of the Dawoodi Bohra Jamaat, under the banner of Faiz-e-Hakimi, Karachi, is organizing a business education event for its members on "A Professional Approach to Global Trading". The event aims at creating an understanding of critical international trading operations, providing insight into pre and post international trading activities and develop an attitude for success for its members, Shah told BusinessLine here on Tuesday.

The Bohras, who have had close connections with Gujarat for generations in both pre and post-Partition eras, were concerned about the future of their children. “The younger generation of SMEs don't want to join their trading businesses because they are highly educated (many of them abroad) and do not want to get into their family businesses.

“I, therefore, advised them to set up an industrial park for manufacturing so that their younger generation could join this business. This is what they have done.”

So, they invited Shah to deliver this training on April 5, 2015, in Karachi. After the training, he is going to conduct over 100 one-on-one meetings with participating SMEs for 20 minutes each, guiding them on their next steps.

Shah’s company, Global Network, which has patented the “Vibrant” model for enhancing trade and investment, co-organized the “Vibrant Kutch” in February 2015, to be followed by “Vibrant Saurashtra” in the next few months. “I could also organise a ‘Vibrant Kenya’ in Africa where a large number of people of Gujarati origin live.”

During his Pakistan visit, he will also explore the possibility of organising a “Vibrant SAARC Women’s Business Conference” in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, he said.

Jagat Shah is the founder and chief mentor of Global Network, an international trade advisory firm and of Cluster Pulse, an economic development agency working in areas of poverty elimination and SME competitiveness projects.

He had earlier worked in Pakistan under a UNIDO project in Wazirabad Cutlery Cluster, Lahore Garment Cluster, Sialkot Sport Goods Cluster and Gujranwala Fan Cluster, guiding them on how to be connected to international markets.
