Ten prominent Indian jewellers have put together a collection of jewellery pieces that will be put to auction by Christie’s in Mumbai on June 6 and part of the proceeds would be used to support the education of girls.
The jewellers held the first road show here on Thursday in the run-up to the auction, which will be followed by similar events at each of the designers’ boutiques and later in New York, before returning to Mumbai. The initiative, called Project Blossoming, is being spearheaded by the international gemstone company Gemfields and Nanhi Kali, a NGO working for the cause of the girl child.
Sanjay Gupta, Director of Tibarumals Jewellers, which is one of the 10 designers participating in the initiative, said there would be 12 jewellery pieces on display, contributed by all 10 jewellers, with the price tag ranging from ₹24 lakh to ₹94 lakh.
“The jewellers will take back the basic price of their pieces and the rest of the auction proceeds would go towards the cause. We have committed a minimum amount of ₹50 lakhs to the cause, with the amount likely to go up depending on the response to the auction,” he told media persons here today. The other Indian jewellers participating in the initiative include Amrapali of Jaipur, Anmol Jewellers of Mumbai, Hazoorilal of New Delhi and Talwarsons of Chandigarh. MC Jolly, DGM of Nanhi Kali Donor Servicing, said the organisation has so far support over 90,000 girl child across different States in the country through academic, education material and social support.
“This is an important cause, as three out of 10 girls who enter class one actually complete their tenth grade,” he said.
