The Bharatiya Janata Party unseated the Congress in Assam, for the first time. Grabbing power in the State is a sign its political influence is expanding beyond its traditional northern and western belt. The BJP won 86 of the 126 seats in the State.

The Congress, which has ruled the State since 2001, won 26 seats. Modi has called the Assam victory an “exceptional win” on Twitter and congratulated his party leaders.

The J Jayalalithaa-led AIADMK bucked the incumbency factor by winning Tamil Nadu for a straight second term. The last time a ruling party returned to power was in 1989. In West Bengal , Trinamool Congress led by Mamata Banerjee is all set for a sweep.

In the Union Territory of Puducherry , the Congress-DMK combinination will be in the hotseat; with a simple majority of 17 in the 30-member Assembly. In Kerala , the CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front landed a blow of the United Democratic Front with a massive win with the front securing 85 seats. For the first time, the BJP opened its account in the 140-member State Assembly.

6:44 pm: In Puthuppally, Kerala 's outgoing chief minister Oommen Chandy polled 71,597 votes, defeating CPI-M rival Jaik C Thomas by a margin of 27,092 votes.

In Malampuzha, LDF's VS Achutanandan won 73,299 votes, beating BJP candidate C Krishnakumar, who polled 46,157, by a margin of 23,142 votes.

Kerala's Social Justice Minister MK Muneer (IUML) wins Kozhikode (South) by a margin of 6327 votes, beating nearest rival Abdul Wahab of INL.

5.53 pm: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa retains RK Nagar constituency defeating DMK rival by 39,545 votes. Jayalalithaa secured 97,218 votes against Shimla Muthuchozhan, who polled 57,673 votes.

West Bengal BJP president Dilip Ghosh beats sitting Congress MLA Gyan Singh Sohanpal from the Kharagpur Sadar seat in West Midnapore district by 6,309 votes. 91-year-old Sohanpal is the senior-most member of the outgoing Assembly.

Outgoing Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi wins from Titabor constituency for the fourth consecutive term. He defeated BJP MP Kamakhya Prasad Tasa by 17,495 votes

5.46 pm: DMK Treasurer MK Stalin retained the Kolathur constituency by a margin of 37,730 votes. Stalin secured 91,303 votes, defeating his nearest AIADMK rival JCD Prabhakar, who polled 53,573 votes.

Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) founder Thol Thirumaavalavan lost by a thin margin of 87 votes in Kattumannarkoil (SC) constituency. The Dalit leader, who contested as the candidate of DMDK - People’s Welfare Front - TMC, lost to AIADMK’s N Murugumaran. Thirumalavan polled 48,363 votes, while Murugumaran, a sitting MLA, got 48,450 votes.

5.33 pm: CPI-M state secretary Surjya Kanta Mishra, who was the Opposition leader in the outgoing Assembly, lost his Narayangarh seat in West Midnapore district to Trinamool Congress nominee Prodyut Kumar Ghosh by 13,589 votes.

Early trends show CPI-M-led LDF leading in 18 seats and Congress-headed UDF in 13.

Kerala Minister AP Anil Kumar (Cong) is leading by 2,325 votes in Wandoor constituency and minister KC Joseph (Cong) leading by 635 votes at Irrikur in Kannur district. Former Finance minister, KM Mani, is leading by 155 votes in Pala. LDF candidates leading include Ramachandran Kadanapally in Kannur, A M Shamseer (Thalassery), James Mathew (Thalaiparambu) and Mathew T Thomas of JDS in Pathnamthitta.

Others are leading in one segment.
